How To Install

Licensing for Employees

There are two installation packages, Office and Home. The Office edition is a managed edition, which means that you will get virus definition updates and version updates from SJSU’s server. Home Edition is unmanaged and will only get updates from Sophos servers.

Sophos license:

  1. Office Edition is licensed for 3 years
  2. Home Edition is licensed for 1 year. Yearly renewal period starts when Fall semester begins

    **** IMPORTANT **** Do not install Home Edition on office computers.

Licensing for Students

The edition is unmanaged and will get updates from Sophos servers.
Sophos license is issued for 1 year. Yearly renewal period starts when Fall semester begins.


What you need for installation

Currently, the software can be installed on the following OS:

  • Windows 2008 server
  • Windows 2003 server
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or later
  • Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later
  • Mac OS X 10.2 or later
  • Linux

Windows 2000/XP/2003 computers must have Internet Explorer 5.0 or later.

Installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows

! Before installing Sophos Anti-Virus:

If you have any other vendors’ anti-virus software, you must uninstall it. Running sav7tiny.exe will automatically remove most Antivirus Enterprises products but not all.

How to install Sophos Anti-Virus from the SJSU website.

  1. If your computer is running Windows 2000/XP/2003/2008/Vista/7, log on as an administrator.
  2. Using the web address and download credentials provided by SJSUOne, go to the SJSU website and save Sophos Anti-Virus for your version of Windows to your computer.
  3. Extract the downloaded Sophos Anti-Virus files to this computer to start the installation wizard.
  4. It is a silent install. Go to Task Manager and look for the AV removal process “avremovew.exe” and Sophos installer “sav7tiny.exe”. If you see the two processes, Sophos is going through the installation process.
  5. Installation is complete when the Sophos Anti-Virus system status bar icon is blue.

Sophos Anti-Virus will update itself automatically from the update source. By default, it will do this every 60 minutes, provided that the computer is connected to the internet.

! If the icon has a red cross superimposed on it, Sophos Anti-Virus failed to update itself. For help, contact your system administrator.

Installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X

You must uninstall any other vendors anti-virus software before installing Sophos Anti-Virus.

How to install Sophos Anti-Virus from the SJSU website

    1. Using the web address and download credentials provided by SJSUOne, go to the SJSU website and save Sophos Anti Virus for Mac OS X to your computer.
    2. Open the downloaded file, find Sophos Anti-Virus.dmg and double-click it.
    3. A Macintosh installer is run. Click Continue. Follow the steps until installation is finished. Installation is complete when the Sophos Anti-Virus system status bar icon is blue.

If the icon is grey, your computer is not protected by Sophos Anti-Virus. For help, contact your system administrator. Sophos Anti-Virus will update itself automatically from the update source. By default, it will do this every 60 minutes, provided that the computer is connected to the internet.

! If the icon has a white cross superimposed on it, Sophos Anti-Virus failed to update itself. For help, contact your system administrator.
